Nicholls grandfather scores $1M prize

ATLANTA — A Nicholls grandfather is celebrating a win from the Georgia Lottery. Laddie Hollis, 62, played the instant game Cash King, winning an instant $1 million top prize.

The lucky winner claimed his prize Aug. 27 at the Georgia Lottery District Office in Tifton.

Food Mart, 500 Van Streat Highway in Nicholls, sold the winning ticket.

“There it was,” Hollis recalled. “I hooped, hollered and squealed. I was happy.”

A logging truck driver, Hollis buys Georgia Lottery tickets at random around the state.

“I just decided to buy one,” he said. “It was the right place at the right time.”

He and his wife, Janice, have two adult children and seven grandchildren.

“I may get something to ride in,” Hollis shared.

Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $16.5 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.7 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.4 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
