New Polls Show Shift Among Gubernatorial Candidates

ATLANTA — There's been a shift in the governor's race, according to two new polls released Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

The new WSB-TV Channel 2/InsiderAdvantage poll asked voters that if the Republican and Democratic primaries were held today, which candidate would they lean toward.

Republican candidate John Oxendine received 26 percent of the vote, followed by Karen Handel with 16 percent and Nathan Deal with 9 percent.

Political analyst Matt Towery told Channel 2 Action News that he has seen a small shift in voters from Deal to Handel.

"She picked up a decent amount of the male vote ... of those males who are interested in the race right now," said Towery.

The margin of error was plus or minus 5 percent.

Democratic candidate Roy Barnes received 47 percent of the vote, followed by Thurbert Baker with 18 percent, David Poythress with 6 percent and DuBose Porter with 5 percent.

Twenty-four percent of those polled had no opinion. The margin of error was plus or minus 6 percent.
