FORT MILL, SC — South Carolina state officials have dedicated a bridge to a man known for waving the American flag on Sept. 11.
Leonard Farrington waved the American flag alone on the bridge over I-77 for a decade following the terrorist attack in 2001.
"I'm not here for publicity, I'm here for this country," Farrington said that day. "No terrorist beats America," he told the Charlotte Observer.
Officials estimate 100,000 people saw Farrington with his flag each year on the anniversary of the attacks.
Farrington, a World War II Navy veteran, died in 2012, but a small group of people arrived at the bridge on Wednesday to continue his tradition.
The state named the Sutton Road overpass in Fort Mill after Farrington last weekend during an official dedication ceremony.
