Mitsubishi breaks ground on new Suwanee plant

SUWANEE, Ga.,None — A major manufacturer broke ground on a new expanded warehouse Friday, promising hundreds of new jobs.

The warehouse will be built on Satellite Boulevard in Suwanee. The governor credited the workforce for keeping Mitsubishi Electric in Metro Atlanta.

"A little over $26 million investment and we're just pleased that Mitsubishi has decided this is going to be the headquarters for the heating and cooling division," Gov. Nathan Deal said.

Mitsubishi Electric has called Gwinnett County home for 20 years. Friday marked their fourth expansion within the county.

The company said despite the economy it has outgrown their current warehouse on Lawrenceville-Suwanee road, about five miles away.

"If you look around there aren't that many backhoes digging and shovels breaking ground these days. I think it shows signs of economic opportunity and a lot of optimism," Mitsubishi Electric employee Michael Smith said.

Workers in Suwanee currently provide technical support and training to contractors, engineers and distributors of its cooling and heating systems.

The governor said they hope to double their workforce.

"You're 200, I understand about 200 that are here now and about 187 that will be joining as a result of this expansion," Deal said.

Deal said this signals opportunity for more growth in the future. He said Friday he credits the great local workforce for keeping the brand name local.

"Because of your good efforts I think is good part of why they have chosen to expand right here," Deal said.

There has been no word yet on when the company will begin hiring for the new positions.
