ATLANTA — Police are looking for a woman they say posed as a hospital employee to steal thousands of dollars from someone trying to buy a car listed on Craigslist.
Sunny Bailey says she saw an ad on Craigslist for a $1,500 Honda and contacted the seller.
“I called her to see if maybe we could work out a deal,” Bailey said.
Bailey says they did. The deal was that she would pay $700 up front and the rest of the money later.
The woman told Bailey she worked at Emory Hospital on Peachtree Street in Midtown.
When they met on Feb. 6, investigators say the woman wore light blue hospital scrubs. Bailey says she was also in a white coat and went as far as wearing a stethoscope around her neck.
“She said are you comfortable buying this car? I said, ‘Yeah.' Because it's just a female. I'm not thinking nothing bad of it,” Bailey said.
Emory police say the woman handed her a key and told her to go to the fourth floor of the parking garage to test drive the car. Bailey says that’s when she handed over $400 as collateral.
“$400 means a lot to me. You know why? Because my rent is only $400,” Bailey said. “It means a lot to me, but it must mean more to her.”
Bailey headed into the parking garage with a mechanic and a friend and realized there was no fourth floor. The key was fake, and the woman was gone.
Bailey gave police a description and looked through the surveillance video. She found that the woman changed clothes before leaving the hospital but left the stethoscope on. Bailey said she was surprised by her audacity.
“She’s risking her life for that,” Bailey said.
Emory says Bailey's not the only victim. Police are still looking for the woman.
