Woman in nail salon brawl says she was defending daughter

SNELLVILLE, Ga.,None — The Stone Mountain woman accused of starting a wild brawl at a Walmart nail salon told police she was protecting her daughter.

Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh was in the courtroom when Detective Collin Flynn of Gwinnett County police testified Wednesday about the altercation.

Monnessia Wright, 35, is in jail, charged in the attack.

A cellphone captured video of a now-infamous melee inside a Snellville Walmart nail salon. The photographer told Channel 2 she began filming it when the situation got out of control.

"She (Wright) told me that her daughter was struck first and that she initially got into the fight to break the fight up," Flynn told the judge.

The mention of her daughter brought Wright to tears.

She apparently told the detective she was emotionally overcome during the brawl as well and didn’t remember many details.

The brawl happened last month inside the Walmart on Centerville Highway.

The victim, 17-year-old Ashley Corbett, showed pictures of her shattered teeth and sliced chin.

"I had nothing to do with it," she told Channel 2 last month.

"She (Corbett) reported at that time a bowl was thrown and struck her in the face by the woman wearing the red,” said Flynn.

Flynn said other customers described Wright as acting unruly the entire time.

"Talking angrily to other customers, she was causing a disturbance over the fact she had to wait in line to get her nails done,” Flynn said.

Several of Wright’s family members came to the hearing, but they did not to talk to Channel 2 Action News’ Kerry Kavanaugh and turned away from the cameras

Wright is charged with aggravated battery and fighting in public.

The judge didn't reduce her charges, but did change her $10,000 cash bond to one through a bail bondsman.
