“We’re amped up and ready to go if something were to happen,” said Stephen Walker.
Walker and his team started removing trees and large limbs at risk of buckling in the wind on Monday.
For Thursday night, he staffed five on-call crews with multiple trucks capable of lifting any large trees that block roads or cause damage.
Rome-Floyd Fire Department Division Chief Clete Bonney said his team briefed firefighters on the storm possibilities, and they checked chainsaws to ensure they were working properly before heavy rain fell.

The department staffed 10 engines and support vehicles with roughly 50 firefighters Thursday night.
“In this area up here, a lot of old growth, big trees and stuff like that,” said Bonney. “With the grounds that are already saturated and things wet, it doesn’t take much for big trees and stuff to come down.”
Bonney said the fire department communicated with 911 dispatchers in neighboring counties so they could alert them to the damage the storm carries with it before it arrives in Floyd County.
