Water main break causes massive sinkhole in Woodstock

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — A water main break that sent thousands of gallons of water gushing has caused a massive sinkhole.

Around 2:30 a.m., Cherokee County confirmed the break with Channel 2 at the intersection of Holly Springs Road and East Cherokee Drive in Woodstock.

Crews turned off the water around 4 a.m., but a 25-30 foot sinkhole -- about 4-5 feet deep -- was left behind.

The intersection is blocked and deputies are concerned about the stability of the road. Several homes are without water.

Channel 2's Rachel Stockman said more crews are due to arrive to assess the damage.

Stockman said she has watched pavement crumble, expanding the sinkhole, throughout the course of the morning.
