Two sinkholes open up between homes

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Residents in one Douglas County neighborhood are wondering who will fix a pair of growing sinkholes between two homes.

The problem appears to have started with a broken storm drain culvert, but when it rains, the sinkholes grow in size.

Dionka Sims lives on one side the two sinkholes, and she spotted them growing during the Monday morning rain storm. Rain water was draining directly into them.

“I immediately took some of my tables and put them directly around the barricade of the hole to prevent the water from going into the hole,” said Sims.

She said on Sunday the holes were barely a foot deep.  Monday afternoon, they had grown to 6 feet deep.

Ann Mousel lives on the other side of the sinkholes. She said she’s been in contact with the Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority, but, according to a letter she received, the culvert is on her property and is her responsibility.

“I’ve been told his could run up to like $30,000 to replace the culvert, because it’s 48 inches in diameter,” said Mousel.

The WSA did not return Channel 2 Action News’ phone call Monday for a response.
