ATLANTA — Southbound lanes of the Buford Connector were temporarily blocked following a crash involving a truck hauling a tank. The truck overturned and lost the 7-ton cement hopper.
The crash happened just after 11:30 a.m. near Amour Drive. The cement hopper hit a railroad bridge as it passed under it along the Buford Spring Connector leading into midtown Atlanta.
A spokesman from the Georgia Department of Transportation told Channel 2’s Berndt Petersen that it sends hundreds of trucks down the Buford Connector, with a special permit based on the height of the bridges.
An employee of the trucking company said they had a state permit for a load up to 15 feet, 2 inches tall. But GDOT said the truck made a wrong turn, and was not supposed to be driving under the bridge, which is 14 feet, 10 inches tall.
Engineers said even though the bridge was hit, it is safe.
“It’s just a little section that broke out of it,” said Dana McCrary, with GDOT. “And the column had some patch work done on it and it knocked some of the patch work off.”
State patrol did not ticket the driver.
