Thousands ring in New Year at Peach Drop

ATLANTA — Thousands of people poured into downtown Atlanta to watch the legendary Peach Drop in Underground Atlanta.

Organizers expected well over 100,000 New Year’s Eve partiers.

There were three stages at the Peach Drop with 25 acts, carnival rides and fireworks that filled the night sky.

Musical acts started Wednesday evening. Michelle Lawrence, with Underground Atlanta, said Sugar Ray and Ludacris helped draw big crowds.

Channel 2 cameras showed most people dancing and celebrating, but a small group turned violent around 11 p.m.

Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes was in the middle of a live report when a scuffle broke out. So far, there were no other reports of fighting.

Atlanta police told Channel 2's Ryan Young that they would be watching from the ground and from above.

A heavy police presence of uniform and undercover officers were backed by more than 1,000 advanced video cameras intended to keep partygoers safe.

At midnight, the 800-pound peach descended 138 feet, taking only 58 seconds to drop with an added touch for 2015.

Crowds cleared out of Underground after the celebration, but left a large mess behind.

Workers used leaf blowers early into the morning to clean-up the trash piled on the streets. By 7 a.m., workers had cleared out of the area, but planned to come back and pressure wash the roads and sidewalks.
