Thieves break in to 20+ cars in Inman Park

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are trying to track down the people responsible for more than 20 car break-ins in Inman Park in northeast Atlanta.

Allison Murphy and her husband, Brendan, are facing hundreds of dollars in car damage following the break-in spree.

"It's really distressing," Allison Murphy said. "You feel like you can't go to sleep at night knowing that you’re safe or that your property is safe.”

Someone broke into Brendan Murphy's car last weekend in Inman Park, along with 15 others.

"It was early in the morning. Sixteen cars were broken into, including my husband's, and they smashed his window," said Allison Murphy.

The burglars also scratched Brendan Murphy's driver's side door, and all they got for it was a pack of gum.

The rash of break-ins happened at a Highland Avenue parking garage next to the Beltline.

Channel 2’s Rikki Klaus checked out the lower level Friday, where the break-ins happened early Saturday morning, and all was quiet. Security guards sat in a golf cart just feet from the entrance.

Klaus asked Joya Davis, who lives and dines in Inman Park, what she thought of the incident and security in the area.

“It actually doesn’t surprise me. I mean, it’s a very safe neighborhood in general, but there’s always going to be people who want to take advantage of people who are out enjoying themselves," said Davis.

Less than a half mile up the road, police say, burglars broke into six other vehicles at the Highland Walk complex last Friday.

Detectives say they have a good lead. A resident spotted the suspected getaway car and got a license plate number, but the search is still on. It’s unclear whether the two incidents are related.
