ATLANTA — Everyone knows that metro Atlanta and Georgia as a whole has earned the nickname âHollywood of the South.â
With a booming film industry with hefty tax credits, filmmakers have been flocking to the Peach State to make their movies.
From Marvel Studios making their superhero flicks a mainstay in the area to Atlantaâs own Tyler Perry Studios, thereâs never a shortage of movie and TV projects calling Georgia home.
Here are some of the highest-grossing movies of 2024 during their theatrical releases that were filmed, at least in part, here in Georgia.

âBad Boys: Ride or Dieâ - $404,544,199
By far Georgiaâs highest-grossing movie of the year, Martin Lawrence and Will Smith teamed up once again for the fourth installment in the âBad Boysâ franchise, which started back in 1995.
This time, the Miami cops are working to clear the name of their late police captain after heâs linked to drug cartels.
It was filmed at Eagle Rock Studios in Atlanta, as well as in Stone Mountain and Miami.
âRed Oneâ - $182,861,176
This Christmas movie starring Chris Evans and Dwayne âThe Rockâ Johnson hasnât had long to make itâs way to the top of this list since it released just last month.
When Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons, is kidnapped, the North Poleâs Head of Security, Johnson, and a hacker, Evans, go on a global mission to get him back and save Christmas.
âRed Oneâ filmed in Atlanta, including around Centennial Olympic Park Drive, and in Hawaii.
âCivil Warâ - $126,185,957
âCivil Warâ tells the story of journalists in a dystopian future America that is in the middle of another civil war.
Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura and Cailee Spaeny play a group of photojournalists making their way to the White House to interview the president, played by Nick Offerman, before he is overthrown.
This movie filmed across metro Atlanta, including its opening scene in front of Big Bethel AME Church.
âFly Me to the Moonâ - $42,247,783
This is Georgiaâs highest-grossing film that didnât call metro Atlanta home. âFly Me to the Moonâ was filmed in the Savannah and Tybee Island area of coastal Georgia.
A historical romcom set just before the Apollo 11 mission, a marketing executive played by Scarlett Johannsson is tasked with staging a fake moon landing just in case the actual mission fails.
She joins the team of a NASA launch director, played by Channing Tatum, and the pairâs working relationship soon becomes more than colleagues.
âThe Forgeâ - $40,392,664
For more than 20 years, Albanyâs The Kendrick Brothers have been making faith-based films, all of which are filmed in local communities across Georgia, to overwhelming success. âThe Forgeâ is their ninth film.
This film focuses on 19-year-old Isaiah who is given an ultimatum by his mom, Christian author Priscilla Shirer, to start making better life decisions or move out. âThe Forgeâ focuses on the power of prayer and dealing with our past to make a better future.
âMegalopolisâ - $13,859,851
What was supposed to be legendary director Francis Ford Coppolaâs epic return to the big screen, âMegalopolisâ was shrouded in controversy before it even released.
An extra filed a lawsuit against Coppola in Fulton County Superior Court claiming that she and other women were sexually harassed while on set. She claimed that Coppola âbegan touching, hugging, kissing and feeling some of the women in the cast who were acting in the scene,â which called for a topless performance in February 2023.
âMegalopolisâ featured an ensemble cast of heavy hitters like Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Shia LeBeouf, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne and more. It tells the story of âNew Rome,â and a battle between an artist vying for a Utopian future, played by Driver, and the cityâs greedy mayor, played by Esposito.
It was filmed at Atlantaâs Trilith Studios, as well as in New York City.
âSaturday Nightâ - $9,801,510
âSaturday Nightâ tells the story of the wild 90 minutes right before the first-ever live broadcast of âSaturday Night Liveâ in 1975 that nearly derailed the now-iconic show before it even started.
Gabriel LaBelle stars as creator Lorne Michaels and Cory Michael Smith, Dylan OâBrien and Matt Wood star as iconic actors Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, respectively.
It was filmed across metro Atlanta, including at Trilith Studios.
