Teen arrested for accident that killed high school teacher

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — One of the teens involved in a weekend car wreck that killed a beloved teacher is now facing charges in her death.

Decatur police said Thursday they arrested Ramiro Pedemonte, 19, for the deadly crash that killed teacher Leah O'Brien, 30, Saturday night.

O’Brien was turning onto Scott Boulevard when she was T-boned by a Dodge Charger.

The teens and O’Brien were heading to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History for prom, which O’Brien was set to chaperone.

O’Brien was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Her daughter Kori, a Fernbank Elementary School second-grader, was in the car when it crashed at Scott Boulevard and Ridley Circle. Kori is in a coma and remains in critical condition.

The Lakeside High School principal told Channel 2 Action News the teens who hit O'Brien were students at Lakeside, where she taught Family and Consumer Science.

Pedemonte was arrested on warrants for first-degree vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle and reckless driving.
