Protesters rally against APS redistricting plan

Woodson and Cooke Elementary students and parents protested Saturday against Atlanta Public Schools officials' decision to close down the two schools as part of a controversial redistricting plan.

ATLANTA — Students and parents are speaking out against Atlanta Public Schools' redistricting plan which they say put their jobs in jeopardy.

Dozens of them, along with community supporters, held a protest rally outside Frederick Douglass High School in southwest Atlanta.

Protesters believe closing these Woodson and Cooke Elementary schools will significantly damage surrounding neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, some parents are also unhappy with decisions made by school district leaders.

Their children now attend Cooke Elementary, which is on the closure list.  At a meeting Friday night, parents said they did not fight the district’s plan because they were assured their kids would be transferred to a better performing school. But now they say that’s not the case.

“Honestly, I can’t risk hope, so if they decide to go ahead and go through with this, my tax dollars have to go somewhere else,” a parent said.

Parents said their kids are slated to attend D.H. Stanton instead of higher-ranked Parkside Elementary.
