Downed tree blocking Campbellton Road

ATLANTA — Crews worked Monday morning to clean up downed trees and power lines after a weekend of rain, including some powerful thunderstorms.

Channel 2's Darryn Moore went to Campbellton Road, where a downed tree blocked the street at Delowe Drive in southwest Atlanta.

On Collier Road in Buckhead, Georgia Power crews worked to replace a utility pole and downed power lines. More than 200 residents in the area lost power.

"We heard the noise of a transformer blow and then we saw all the lines shaking, the power lines overhead," resident Jeremy Hammerton said.

Chris Copenhaven said he expects more trees to fall on Collier Road.

"It's always frequent over here, because of all the old trees that line the street. There's been two that have dropped right there in the same place," Copenhaven said.

Drivers traveling westbound on Collier Road from Peachtree Street should make a right on Overbrook Drive, left on Evergreen lane and then back onto Collier Road to avoid the downed tree.

Residents also lost cable and telephone service.

6 a.m. Monday, 968 homes in metro Atlanta were without power, down from more than 6,000 at 5 a.m.

Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said there will be some relief from the rain Monday morning, but it will return by the afternoon. She said some areas could see light showers, and others will get heavy downpours.

Residents in Marietta are also cleaning up from weekend storms.

One house on Glen Lane had three pine trees fall on it and a fourth fall in the yard. Homeowner Glenn Radford estimates there is about $100,000 worth of damage.

"My wife says there's been a pop somewhere and our hallway started flooding with water just immediately," Radford said.

The trees poked two large holes in a couple of bedrooms. Tarps cover the holes until permanent repairs can be made.

Radford is worried another big pine tree that is leaning from a neighbor's home will also fall. He plans to bring out a tree removal crew on Monday.
