Snellville mayor voluntarily suspends himself from duties following indictment

Snellville Mayor Tom Witts voluntarily suspends himself

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A mayor in Gwinnett County, accused of using campaign money for porn sites and other personal expenses, has voluntarily suspended himself.

Snellville Mayor Tom Witts was not at Monday night's city council meeting.

The city attorney read a letter from witts to city council, it reads in part:

My decision to accept a suspension of my office voluntarily is designed to get my issues out of the way so the other leaders can pick up our banner without the distraction of my defense.

Witts vows to fight the charges.

Mayor pro tem Barbara Bender will assume Witts' duties.
