Young pregnant mother of 2 shot, killed at Rockdale County home, family says

CONYERS, Ga. — A young mother is dead after she was shot during a fight with her boyfriend and another woman, according to family members.

The family and neighbors told Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach the victim was a mother of two young children and recently learned she was pregnant.

The shooting happened early Thursday morning off Golfview Terrace. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 24-year-old Kyla Cooper and the suspect as Arkia Tate.

Deputies said that Cooper and Tate got into a verbal argument with each other when Tate shot Cooper.

Gehlbach spoke with a neighbor who heard the argument and the shooting.

“And I look out the window and was a car flying down the street with lights off…that’s when I knew something was off,” Kashema Smith said.

Smith said she and the other neighbors came outside, but there was nothing they could do to save Cooper, who was shot in the driveway.

Deputies charged Tate with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. At the house, they also arrested Rashad Thompson for charges unrelated to the murder.
