Atlanta police are investigating a shooting during a funeral in southwest Atlanta Tuesday.
According to investigators, there was a funeral for a slain mother at the Workhouse for Faith Baptist Church at 802 Pryor Street.
Shots were fired in the parking lot, just feet from the church’s font door.
Several men in two cars were involved, and one of the cars had a baby inside.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene after they heard the gunfire.
“I heard at least 10 shots, and everybody that was up there just started running this way,” Deacon Eddie Holt said.
The suspected drive-by shooting happened during the funeral for Tiffany Bailey. Police found Bailey, a young mother of three, shot in the head at her Cleveland Avenue apartment earlier in November.
She died at the hospital two days later, and her death remains unsolved. Bailey’s family members say they have been further traumatized following the attack during the funeral.
“I’m just going through stuff after stuff. I can’t deal with this. I need justice for my daughter,” Bailey’s mother, Joann Delmar, said.
The shots rang out right before pastor Franklin Sherrer was to deliver Bailey’s eulogy. He said the people inside the church pushed him down on the ground to protect him from the shots.
“It happened so fast, I didn’t know what was going on,” he said.
Channel 2’s Aaron Diamant said there were no injuries reported.
One person has been detained. Police are working to identify other people involved and believe a silver Dodge Neon may have been one of the cars involved.
“The world’s getting in a bad condition, that’s what I’m thinking. We are not safe anywhere, even at church,” Holt said.
