Police investigate home invasion, shooting in Sandy Springs

Sandy Springs police are investigating a home invasion and shooting at a home Thursday night.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Police told Channel 2’s Mike Petchenik that a woman was approached outside her Spring Bluff Drive home while she waited for husband to arrive home.

“The victim went outside to open up the back gate, was confronted by a male in her back yard, was forced back in the home, tied with zip ties, and her purse was taken and a cellphone was taken,” said Sgt. Ron Momon with Sandy Springs Police.

Momon said that when the woman's husband arrived home, he confronted one of the men.

“The husband was able to get a bat, unfortunately confronted one of the suspects and ended up getting shot in the leg,” Momon said.

He told Petchenik that the victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

“We haven’t really been able to tie anything to why these victims were targeted. No idea at this point,” he said. “We’re hoping that someone who saw something suspicious pertaining to this will contact Crimestoppers.”

Neighbors told Petchenik that they are concerned about the attack.

“I was alarmed it could happen in our neighborhood,” said one neighbor who asked to have his identity concealed. “It’s not something you expect to hear, certainly not (an) everyday thing.”

Neighbor Tim Harris said he saw police swarm the street and later got an email from his homeowners association about the incident.

"It said it was random act, a guy with a gun, and not very many details," he said. "If it was random, that's more scary because that means anyone can come in the neighborhood."
