Teen sentenced for stabbing grandmother more than 50 times

ATLANTA — An Atlanta teen admitted in court Wednesday that he killed his grandmother by stabbing her more than 50 times.

Charles Price III, a then 14-year-old Therrell High School student, allegedly stabbed his grandmother, Mary Price, to death in April 2014.

Police said he stabbed her nearly 57 times.

Prosecutors said Mary Price was upset that Charles Price III had missed the school bus.

School resource officers were some of the first people to speak with Charles Price III. They said he showed up to school with bloodied clothes.

He made statements to people at school. The information prompted police to go to Mary Price's home, where they found her dead.

Police said they found massive amounts of blood inside the house on Fairburn Road. They also found a broken knife in the kitchen and another broken knife in the living room.

Detectives said Mary Price is the mother of an Atlanta police officer. The officer is not related to the teen, authorities said.

Charles Price III, now 16 years old, said he has no memory of the stabbing.

Charles Price III was originally charged with murder, but after doctors determined he had been suicidal at the time and suffered from severe depression anxiety, the charges were reduced to voluntary manslaughter.

He pleaded guilty and a judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison plus five years of probation as part of a negotiated plea.
