Police dogs in LaGrange will have GPS collars

LAGRANGE, Ga. — LaGrange Mayor Jim Thornton says the city is purchasing GPS collars for all of their police dogs.

This comes after a LaGrange K-9 officer disappeared. Channel 2 Action News first reported Monday that K-9 officer Chico and his handler were responding to a call in search of a fleeing escaped felon.

After police apprehended the suspect, Chico was nowhere to be found. Channel 2 Action News reported Wednesday that Chico was found alive and appeared to be in good health.

Thornton told Channel 2 Action News the LaGrange police have been using K-9 units for almost 20 years and that was the first time a dog disappeared.

He says that, after a few conversations with the city manager and police chief, they’ve decided that the GPS collars are a necessary and appropriate step to prevent it from happening again.

Thornton says the Police Department will cover the costs of the GPS collars from the general operating budget of the department.
