Picture of woman's lost ID turns up on Twitter

EAST POINT, Ga. — A local woman says her driver's license was stolen nearly three months ago and somehow landed in the hands of a Houston woman who not only used it at a nightclub, but posted it to Twitter.

Gineekia Welch says she was at the Fox Theater for a concert July 25 when she first noticed her license was missing. But it wasn't until last week that it showed up on a Twitter feed out of Houston.

Welch tells Channel 2’s Liz Artz that she's now living in fear as a woman, whose picture, driver’s license number and current address were posted on Twitter.

She learned about what happened when she received a phone call from a man living in Houston.

“He said that he felt it in his heart that it was important. He looked at the ID and realized it was valid ID and maybe somebody was actually looking for their ID. He didn't think it was funny,” she says.

Someone posted a photo of Welch's license, saying, “I used this last night to get into Carro's.”

Welch called Houston police and was told to call local authorities and file a report. An East Point detective then called the woman associated with that Twitter account.

“She did admit posting it, but it was supposed to be a joke because she entered into a club that doesn't normally check for pictures,” Welch says.

Welch says the woman also told the officer she found the driver's license at the Georgia Aquarium in July. Welch says she hasn't been there in years.

“What were your other intentions on using my ID?” Welch asked.

Welch went to her bank and flagged her accounts with a fraud alert, but feels the woman who took her license, used it and posted it on the Internet should face criminal consequences.

“If something were to happen to me then that’s when I feel like the cops would jump on it. Don’t wait until something happens before you stop it,” she says. “That’s my ID and my life that’s in danger because you chose to post whatever it was that you thought was a joke on Twitter.”
