FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. — Peachtree City’s police chief has not talked with his wife since she was hospitalized New Year’s day with a gunshot wound.
When two agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation interviewed Maggie McCollom in her hospital room in Atlanta Medical Center on Monday, her husband was not present.
"I do know that he has not spoken to her since she has been in the hospital,” GBI’s Sherry Lang said.
Chief William McCollom is the head of the Peachtree City Police Department. During the early hours of New Year's Day, he called 911 and told a dispatcher he had accidentally shot his wife.
The GBI told McCollom not to speak to his wife while the case is being investigated.
"It's not a court order. We asked the hospital staff to limit her visitors to immediate family,” Lang said.
Channel 2 Action News has learned that that also included the victim's grown children.
The chief said his service weapon was on the bed the night of the shooting, and when he moved it, it went off. It does not appear his wife was able to add or subtract much from that account.
"During the interview, she said when the shooting occurred, she was asleep. She does not recall what happened. Ms. McCollom also said that she believes the shooting was an accident,” Lang said.
The chief remains on paid leave from the city.
Maggie McCollom is currently in good condition.
