JONESBORO, Ga. — Parents are concerned about losing a memorial garden where they go to visit the final resting place of babies they lost.
About three dozen families who lost their unborn children scattered the ashes at a memorial garden in Clayton County.
Amanda Bartlett and her family still visit the memorial rose garden on North McDounough Road in Jonesboro but wonder how long the garden will last.
Bartlett said staffers at Southern Regional Medical Center suggested the garden as the final resting place for her son, Preston, who was stillborn.
Last week, the family learned that Pope Dixon Funeral Home, which owned the garden, went into foreclosure. Now the land is for sale and the future of the garden is uncertain.
"We have to worry about where our baby is going to be or if something's going to happen and we're not going to be allowed onto the property. Are they going to pave over it?" Bartlett said.
Bartlett started an online petition supporting the garden. Her family and others wish someone would step in and do something.
Jonesboro's mayor said the garden is private property, and the city has little authority over what happens.
The agent handling the property for the bank said he is not sure if the land was part of the foreclosure on the funeral building.
