No threat found in 'emergency situation' at Fort Benning, officials say

FORT BENNING, Ga. — An emergency situation Wednesday at Fort Benning, the U.S. Army post in west Georgia, is close to a resolution, and it was prompted by concerns about a vehicle, authorities said.

Fort Benning officials said Wednesday afternoon on the base's official Facebook account and on Twitter that authorities secured the area and that personnel were evacuated as a precaution.

The posts say a soldier asked for help with a battery jump. He misidentified part of the electrical system on the vehicle of the person assisting him, according to the posts, and he alerted emergency officials because he thought there was a threat.

Officials on the scene determined there was no threat.

The base said the situation was close to being resolved early Wednesday afternoon, but authorities offered no further details.
