SANDY SPRING, Ga. — A Sandy Springs Police officer has been released from the hospital after being stabbed multiple times while responding to a home invasion Friday.
Sandy Springs police have not released the identity of the officer per his request, but said he is “doing extremely well and is recovering at home with his loved ones.”

The officer was stabbed when he responded to reports of a home invasion on Cameron Glen Drive Friday. Multiple neighbors had reported seeing a strange man, later identified as Matthew Lanz, walking in the area and possibly breaking into homes.
When he broke into the home on Cameron Glen Drive, the woman and her son who lived there called police.

At some point, Lanz got ahold of a knife, and when police arrived on the scene he attacked the officer. Another officer shot Lanz, wounding him.
Lanz was taken into custody and charged with multiple crimes including aggravated assault and attempted murder.
Cobb County Police later were able to connect Lanz to the murders of an Acworth couple the day before. Justin and Amber Hicks were found shot to death in their home on Verbena Drive Thursday morning.

Channel 2 Action News learned that Lanz lived in the home next door to the Hicks’ home.
Cobb police have obtained warrants to arrest Lanz on charges of murder, aggravated assault, home invasion and posession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
