Metro Atlanta retirement community celebrates Mother’s Day with parade

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — So many metro Atlanta area mothers and grandmothers live in retirement communities.

Unfortunately, face-to-face visits with loved ones on this Mother's Day just couldn't happen because of the pandemic.

But a retirement community in Sandy Springs decided to improvise.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen talked to the life enrichment director at the Hammond Glen retirement community in Sandy springs.

Bianca Houston said they came up with a plan to still show moms, grandmothers and great grandmothers lots of love on Sunday.

The community organized a parade!

"The pandemic has changed a lot in how everyone interacts," Houston said. " So definitely we have to think outside the box. Thank goodness this actually seemed to work!"

A good four-dozen cars full of loved ones, some holding signs and balloons, made the loop past the front doors. Some did it two or three times.

Cindy Ackerman came to visit her grandmother.

"It's the best thing you can do in this situation," Ackerman said.

Anita Beckman is one of dozens of mothers who live at the facility.

“It’s wonderful!” she said. “Oh, it was just sweet. Sweet thought. Sweet work, and a lot of thought behind it.”
