NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Two construction workers were hospitalized after being hit by a driver along a local interstate.
Authorities said the 21-year-old driver of a white Toyota Avalon drove into a work zone on Georgia 400 just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. It happened near Haynes Bridge Road in Alpharetta.
The driver hit one construction worker, who suffered minor injuries, and another who is in critical condition. The one in critical condition was pinned against a guardrail and underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon.
Officials said the driver first hit a Ford pickup truck, and the truck then crashed into a 48-year-old worker who became pinned between the truck and the guardrail. %

The other injured worker frantically called 911 for help.
"Somebody just plowed through us in a construction zone. We need EMS now. My boss is pinned against the guardrail," the woman said to the dispatcher.
To help free the construction worker, all lanes of traffic had to be shut down.
Police say the driver of the first car told them she was confused when she crashed into the pickup truck.
They do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The driver has not been charged.
"At this point it's an accident. We are evaluating the situation. Charges will probably be forthcoming," Officer George Gordon said.
GDOT spokeswoman Analysce Baker says there are more than a dozen state road projects underway across metro Atlanta, and drivers need to be aware.
"We want them to pay attention, slow down and watch for workers. They want to go home just like you and I at the end of the day," Baker said.
