Bears caught on camera passing through metro Atlanta front yards

ROSWELL, Ga. — If you’re traveling through the north Georgia mountains, you might expect to see a bear or two casually walking around.

If you’re in metro Atlanta, the chance of spotting of a bear is much lower. But after several sightings in the area, that chance isn’t zero.

Neighbors in Roswell shared some surveillance camera footage with Channel 2′s Christian Jennings on Wednesday.

They say you may might want to bring in bird feeders and pet food and secure your garbage cans or you could find a furry visitor in your front yard.

Officials say they can smell a food source a mile away.

“The neighborhood has been alarmed, and I am ‘bear-ly’ coping because I’m afraid if I go outside, I’ll encounter a bear,” Diane Casey said with tongue-in-cheek.

Mason Spratt shot video of a black bear casually trespassing through a neighbor’s front yard on North Pond Trail in Roswell.

Carl Creedon’s surveillance camera also captured a black bear on Clear Lake Terrace on Wednesday night.

“I’ve lived here since the 1980s we’ve never had a bear in this neighborhood,” Creedon told Jennings. “Now I think twice before I come outside.”

Jennings is no stranger herself to bears getting into places they shouldn’t.

When Jennings was visiting Asheville, North Carolina a few weekends ago, a bear spotted her Chick-fil-A cup and bag inside the car outside her rental house and had a field day. The mama bear and her two cubs were able to open the unlocked car doors. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Bears have also been spotted in Sandy Springs and Peachtree Corners.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says this is the time of years for bears to be on the move, but if you don’t leave out a food source, they won’t stick around.
