Neighbors want burned-out home removed

ATLANTA — Many of the homes on Pine Oak Drive in the Westwood community have owners who have lived there for decades. But for the past six months, they've had to live with an unwelcome neighbor.

"We don't know what else we can do," neighbor Gloria Watts said.

A fire gutted one of the homes, leaving nothing but a charred brick shell and neighbors are desperate for a cleanup.

"It looks like it's hazardous. I don't know it could fall. The kids could be in there playing," Watts said.

"The worst part of it is the trash on the side and in front with the grass being really high," neighbor Keith Willis said.

Willis has the misfortune of living right next to the house. He's concerned about rodents and what or whoever else may be in the house.

"You have a lot of vagrants who are in and out," neighbor Willie Ector said.

"The city has come out and different people have come out and I thought they were going to do something about it but they haven't," Willis said.

Channel 2 Action News contacted Atlanta Code Enforcement about the home Tuesday. They say they were able to locate the property holder and cite them, bringing the case into the court system.

But records show that the case has been reset at least twice. The last court date was back in May.

"I just feel we need more attention given to this particular house because it could be hazardous," Watts said.

Whether it's a teardown or a rebuild, neighbors say they need the system to work for them before the situation gets even worse or someone gets hurt.

"It needs to come down in the neighborhood," Watts said.
