Mystery bullet pierces Milton home

MILTON, Ga. — Milton police want to know who fired a bullet into a man's home late Sunday night.

An incident report obtained by Channel 2's Mike Petchenik said the victim told police he heard several gunshots behind his home on Waterside Drive, and when he went outside to investigate, he saw a man with a flashlight.  The next day, police said he found a bullet hole in his kitchen wall.

"We don't know if someone was hunting at night illegally, or out playing around with guns, or what was going on," Milton Police Captain Shawn McCarty told Petchenik.

McCarty said the round appears to have been fired from a rifle, leading investigators to believe it could have been a hunter or someone shooting target practice.

"At this point we're just trying to figure out what's the whole story behind it," McCarty said.

The homeowner didn't want to talk about what happened, but his next-door neighbor told Petchenik neighbors have been complaining for several months about random gunfire behind the subdivision off Mayfield Road.

"Over the past couple of months, it's been getting worse.  You hear people target shooting," said Lazlo Toth.  "They'll be firing shots off in the day, in the evening.  Multiple rounds off."

Toth said he's concerned about the bullet going into his neighbor's house and he wants the city to do something about it.

"I have kids here.  My window's back there," he said.  " A couple inches off that trajectory and it's through a window."
