Mom says daughter is in jail for crime friend confessed to

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.,None — A Gwinnett County woman says her 18-year-old daughter is in jail for a crime that someone else confessed to.

Latonya Nelson, 18, was arrested on Thursday and charged with stealing wigs at a Lawrenceville beauty shop.

Nelson's mother, Kathy Wilson, admitted her daughter, a student at Norcross High School, is not perfect. Nelson was arrested and charged with stealing a bra in September. She was sentenced to community service.

"I'm not saying my daughter is 100 percent innocent in her lifetime, but right now, my daughter is 100 percent innocent," Wilson said.

Surveillance footage from Christmas Eve at the Top Beauty Supply store on Grayson Highway shows another woman, who was in the store with Nelson, stealing expensive hair extensions and putting them in her purse.

Lawrenceville police issued a warrant for Nelson for theft after tracing the tag number of her car.

After learning about the warrant, Wilson took her daughter and the friend who was with her to the nearest police station in Norcross.

According to the Norcross Police Department report, Nelson's friend confessed to stealing the hair extensions.

The officer who issued the Norcross police report told Channel 2 Action News reporter Sophia Choi that he forwarded all the information to Lawrenceville police. He said he was told the officer handling the case is out of the office for a week, and nothing could be done until the officer returns.

"Who takes over? There has to be a chain of command. If one person is out, who takes over so my daughter can be released?" Wilson said.

Wilson said the woman who made the confession was never arrested.
