Mitt Romney's Atlanta visit prompts Twitter threats

ATLANTA — Georgia's top Republican officials are showing their support for Mitt Romney at a fundraising event in Atlanta.

The GOP presidential nominee stopped Wednesday in downtown Atlanta to meet donors and raise money at the Marriott Marquis. The Romney campaign said the guest list included Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, state Attorney General Sam Olens, House Speaker David Ralston and Georgia GOP chairwoman Sue Everhart.

Romney's campaign says it sold 960 tickets to the event. The minimum donation was $1,000 per person.

A few protesters gathered outside the hotel during the fundraiser.

Romney aggressively attacked President Barack Obama's policies saying that only he is equipped to help poor and middle-class Americans.

He's warning that Obama is trying to change the country "in ways we can't imagine." He says the fundamental question in the election is not which candidate cares about poor and middle-class Americans. Instead, he says, the question is which candidate can help them.

Romney says, quote, "I can. He can't."

Romney's comments come two days after an unauthorized video surfaced showing Romney telling donors that nearly half of Americans are dependent upon government and believe they are victims. It's the latest in a string of problems for the Republican candidate seven weeks out from Election Day.

The website GeorgiaTipSheet.com reported numerous instances of Twitter users sending threatening tweets Wednesday about the presidential hopeful.

A tweet sent by Twitter user @WhateverKalea said, "Loads up watergun w / acid RT @LarryKOOLington: Oh Mitt Romney is in ATL today ……"

Another said "loads choppa" in response to the same tweet. Choppa is a slang term for a fully automatic firearm.

Twitter user @itsCOKEWAVE said, "Oh dey gon shoot dat man !" in response to a tweet about Romney being in Atlanta.

Another Twitter user asked a popular rapper to "take (Romney) out."

"Hey, @souljaboy... Yeen doin s***. Mitt Romney is in ATL so if you gon'head & take him out, I PROMISE it'll help your career. #justathought," Twitter user @DfromCP wrote.
