Military family robbed of everything on Veterans Day

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — On Veterans Day, a military family had everything they own stolen in College Park as they moved across country.

The family said they were spending the night Monday at the College Park Hyatt, and woke up Tuesday to find their moving truck and personal vehicle towed behind gone.

Army soldier Jason Jarmendiz, his wife and their three children are being relocated from Houston to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Channel 2’s Liz Artz spoke to the family Wednesday.

Jarmendiz said his wife was the first one to notice the truck was gone.

"‘The truck is not there.’ What do you mean the truck is not there? Truck doesn't disappear," said Jason.

But the truck did disappear with everything they own.

"Our degrees, my nursing license. Everything. Our passports," said Veronica.

Even the children had belongings stolen.

“It’s kind of sad because all their toys are gone,” said Jason.

Veronica said she’s most concerned about lost family photos. All of their family photos from the time the two oldest were babies also disappeared with the truck.

“Pictures, the memories. They're not going back. They keep growing and growing,” said Veronica.

The U-Haul was found Wednesday at an apartment complex off Godby Road.

Police said all the family's valuables, even Jarmendiz's military uniforms, hats and medals were stolen. All that was left, detectives said, were clothing and some furniture.

Police took Artz to their lot minutes before they processed the truck. It was clear the truck had been hot-wired.

“A move is stressful enough, all this stuff middle of move more stress on my shoulders cannot deal with situation,” said Jason.

Wednesday was Veronica’s birthday. She said this is the worst birthday she has ever had.

The family said they did not have homeowner’s insurance since they were in the middle of a move.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for donations to help the family.
