Flood watch canceled for metro Atlanta

ATLANTA — A flood watch has been canceled for the metro Atlanta area.

The area will start to dry out through the day and will be dry for several days.

Channel 2's Karen Minton tracked the rain as it moved through northern areas of Georgia on Channel 2 Action News This Morning.

This increased rainfall will lead to minor flooding in areas with poor drainage and creeks that are already running high.

Metro Atlanta can also expect to feel sustained strong winds throughout the day Monday.

Parts of metro Atlanta will have a chance of sunshine Tuesday afternoon.

Temperatures will heat up again this week, but another cold front will move in by next weekend. Low temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s.

Thousands without power from overnight

Georgia Power crews are working to restore power to more than 6,500 customers Monday morning. Falling trees and high winds knocked out power to many people.

One homeowner on Holiday Avenue in northwest Atlanta says a tree limbs pierced the roof of their house Sunday night.

The homeowner was trapped for nearly an hour before firefighters were able to get him out.

The branches went through the roof and trapped the homeowner while he was lying in bed. He suffered cuts and bruises and medics took him to the hospital.

South of Atlanta in Fayette County, heavy limbs from a tree crashed through a woman's bedroom ceiling missing her by inches.

"I literally saw this thing just… it was horrible," said Garnetta Nnanna.

It happened on Carrollswoods Drive.

Nnanna told us just hours earlier, a tree uprooted in her back yard and crushed her deck and patio. She said all the rain that saturated the ground caused her trees to fall.

"I was frantic. I just started screaming. My daughter said, 'mom, I'm coming!' So, this is how it is," Nnanna said.

Over the years she took down 15 trees to avoid this problem and said it may be time to cut down some more.

It was a very close for both the homeowners. But the good news here is the branches didn't take down any power lines.
