Metro Atlanta residents say Halloween will go on despite COVID-19 pandemic

ATLANTA — Rhonda Wingard says no matter what is going on in the world, you don’t cancel holidays.

Her yard is all decked out for Halloween, and she and many of her neighbors in Dacula say you can socially distance trick or treat. They’re one of many metro Atlanta families not giving up on the holiday despite a pandemic and fears of COVID-19 spreading.

“When we did this, a neighbor came out and said thanks for doing it.  It puts a lot of smiles on a lot of kids' faces,” Wingard said.

Some plan to put a bowl of candy at the end of the driveway, while others are building candy chutes out of PVC pipe. Anything to distribute treats and socially distance themselves.

"I think the kids may actually think it’s cool to see their candy slide down a tube and they pick it up.  Might be exciting for them,' neighbor Brandon Ramcharran said.

Rhonda says she might build one too.  But she’ll also take the pulse of the cul-de-sac and see what the parents of little ones are most comfortable with.

“We actually dress up for Halloween.  I’ll dress up like one of my characters.  I enjoy interacting with the kids.  But if that’s not going to work, I have little gift bags and I’ll just portion out the candy and put it out here.  We’ll probably sit in lawn chairs, wave, and say hi to everybody.”

What are the restrictions when it comes to Halloween in Georgia? We checked with Gov. Brian’s Kemp’s office since the state’s COVID-19 restrictions are extended through Halloween.

The governor’s office said any gatherings over 50 people can be shut down by law enforcement if people aren’t six feet apart and not wearing masks. Parties up to 50 people are allowed without social distancing even though it’s encouraged.

When it comes to trick-or-treating, there are no restrictions that keep kids from doing that. However, officials are encouraging parents to make sure it’s done in a safe way.

If you still want to hand out candy from your home, police suggest you wrap the candy individually and leave it in a bowl in your drive way or somewhere far from your front door.
