Man rescued after tree crashes through Buckhead home, traps him inside

ATLANTA — Atlanta fire crews have rescued a man who was trapped inside a garage after a tree crashed down on a Buckhead home, slicing it in half.

Channel 2′s Christian Jennings was at the home off Old Ivy Road in Buckhead Monday morning watching firefighter work to get the man out. After an hour-long rescue, Jennings watched as firefighters were finally able to pull the man out of the house and onto a stretcher.

Atlanta fire confirmed the 47-year-old had been trapped inside since 7 a.m. He was asleep when the tree fell.

Atlanta fire battalion chief Douglas Hatcher told Jennings the victim is expected to be OK and was responsive throughout the rescue.

“He stayed remarkably calm considering how he got woken up this morning. That really helps us out and helps everybody else stay calm,” Hatcher said.

Firefighters used wood as part of its rescue. Hatcher said it was used to stabilize the tree and stop it from coming back down.

“We have technical rescue teams who go through a lot of training, over and above what they do for fire training. This is exactly what this kind of stuff is for,” Hatcher said.

The man’s identity and condition have not been released.
