Suspect dead, 2nd in custody after officer shot trying to stop contraband drop at Georgia prison

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist with the investigation into a deadly shootout at a state prison.

The GBI says two men were at the Washington State Prison in Davisboro, Georgia for a contraband drop around 10:45 p.m. Sunday.

Three Georgia Department of Correction K-9 officers were working to stop the drop when one of the men, 26-year-old Marquavious Parks of Athens, shot at them, according to GBI release.

One K-9 officer was shot in the hand and grazed in the shoulder. He was taken to a hospital in Augusta and has been released. Parks was found dead in a nearby pond. The GBI said an autopsy is pending.

A second man, 51-year-old John Snow of Monroe, was taken into custody.

Aggravated assault against a peace officer and felony murder charges are pending against Snow. The GBI says more charges are anticipated.

The GDC called the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and GBI to investigate. This is the 94th shooting involving a law enforcement officer that the GBI has been asked to investigate this year.
