Man sentenced to 15 years in Doraville officer's death

Shane Wilson

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A man has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and DUI in the death of Doraville Officer Robert Shane Wilson.

Channel 2's Carol Sbarge was there as the officer's family madean emotional statement in court.

Wilson's stepfather told the court that Wilson's widow was crushed by his death and that his mother cries every day.

On Friday the man responsible for all the heartache was sentenced.

"I'm not the one who lost a child who I loved without condition. I've lost the light in my wife's eyes," said Jim Hanson.

Hanson told the court Friday how Wilson's death devastated his family. Then he was very direct with the defendant.

"You sir are nothing but the scum of the earth and a menace to society. One can only pray that your children can learn from the actions of their father, that there is a better life," Hanson said.

Wilson was driving along Interstate 20 in DeKalb County while responding to a call in November. He was hit head-on by wrong way driver Dean Jones.

Witnesses said Jones had just made a U-turn on I-20 and had a blood alcohol level of .14.  Jones had two previous DUI's and many other offenses.

Wilson left behind a wife and a son.

The prosecution asked for 15 years with 12 to serve; the defense wanted six to eight served.

The defendant's mother spoke to Wilson's family.

"I really do empathize with your family and I hope that one day you can forgive my son for what happened," Jones' mother said.

The judge sentenced Jones to 15 years, to serve 12.
