Man says sinkhole that opened up at size of grapefruit is now size of car

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A Lithonia man told Channel 2 Action News a large hole opened up between his house and his neighbor's house, and with all the recent rain, it just kept getting bigger and deeper.

He said DeKalb County came out to assess and make plans to fix the problem, but that was six months ago.

He said the county hasn't taken any significant action since to address what he calls a "major safety hazard."

"It just literally doubled, and then it kept doubling, and then it got deeper and deeper and now it's just massive," said Neicho Meyers.

It took Channel 2's Alyssa Hyman two days of emailing and calling DeKalb County for someone to respond to late Wednesday afternoon.

"It's kind of frustrating, because your calling them everyday on your lunch break and you're just kind of getting the runaround," Meyers said.

The county said a collapsed storm drainage pipe was ultimately what caused the sinkhole, adding the road and drainage division has hired a contractor to repair the pipe for $21,000, which should be done in the next 30 days, depending on the weather.

As for Meyers, he's hopeful but still a little skeptical.

"I need to get it fixed ill believe it when I see it, but I hope it happens," he said.

On top of the safety issues, Meyers said they now have a rodent problem because the sewer system is exposed. All you can imagine, all this has crushed his hopes of putting his house on the market.
