COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Crews have shut down a Coweta County highway after a gas line was hit Thursday.
“A contractor unrelated to Atlanta Gas Light working on roadway repairs damaged a natural gas line near Highway 16 in Newnan. The safety of our employees, customers and the public is our No. 1 value. Atlanta Gas Light crews are on the scene working with first responders to safely make repairs,” Atlanta Gas Light said in a statement Thursday.

Highway 16 West between Witcher Rd. and Ga. 34 bypass is currently closed.

Authorities are asking people to avoid the area as they work to contain the leak.
NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene and shot video that clearly shows gas spewing into the air.
