Lower your monthly phone bill with Wi-Fi service

ATLANTA — For many families, the cellphone bill can be well over $100 each month.

Jim Warren said paying $160 per month for service was not worth it, so he switched to a Wi-Fi phone service.

"My phone plan is Republic Wireless and I have a $10 a month plan," said Warren.

As long as he is around a Wi-Fi network, he has access to data to run apps and Google, but even if he isn't near Wi-Fi, he still has the ability to call and text.

"The few times that I'm away from Wi-Fi and I receive only phone calls and messages far outweigh the extra $150 we'd have to pay," said Warren.

According to a 2012 study by CISCO Internet Business Solutions Group, consumers use their mobile devices at home more than any other place.

That means the likelihood that you'll find yourself without Wi-Fi is pretty low.

Republic Wireless does require customers to purchase their phone, but there is no contract required.

For Warren, the decision to switch was easy "because if for some reason if I don't like Republic anymore I just don't pay my bill, my $10 dollar bill," he said.

If you're willing to bump your payment to $17.50 per month, you will have access to limitless data.
