ATLANTA — A local woman is sharing a powerful story of how she is beating breast cancer.
Channel 2's Linda Stouffer said advocates are trying to raise awareness at the state capitol about the need to care for patients living with the disease, including Rhonda Williams, who found a lump about the size of a marble that pushed her into a scary new fight.
"It rings over and over again in my head. Stage 2 breast cancer, invasive and it was aggressive," Williams said.
She just had a mammogram six months earlier through her work in hospital patient care.
She's telling every woman she knows to screen and self-check.
"You need everything, need a combination of everything, to be sure," Williams said.
American women face a 1 in 8 chance in their lifetimes of a breast cancer diagnosis.
Williams' courage and faith are the inspiration for her department's pink ribbon door.
There's cancer in her family with her grandmotherand an uncle.
Williams' mother is a breast cancer survivor, and now, so is she. Her final reconstructive surgery was last week.
"Self-awareness, know the signs and symptoms, risk factors, its important, it saved my life, it matters," Williams said.
Additionally, hospitals are doing things to make the process easier.
