High school senior says classmates struggling over school closure during coronavirus pandemic

ATLANTA — It’s virtual learning only from here on out for Georgia students. That leaves educators, parents and students to figure out what the rest of the school year will look like for everyone.

With all schools closed, Georgia students won’t physically go back to school until August, but for seniors, it’s over.

No prom, no graduation ceremony and that news is really hitting them hard.

Channel 2’s Tyisha Fernandes spoke Thursday to a high school senior, who said she is seeing her friends really struggle, mentally, with what’s going on.

The Peachtree Ridge senior said it has been a challenge for her and her friends learning digitally and away from each other.

“I’ve seen so many posts from my friends, saying they’re depressed. Saying, ‘What’s the point anymore? And I’ve seen people, completely sane, like not posting anything actually,” said Kayla Opore, who attends Peachtree Ridge High School.

Opore hopes her school district will look into postponing senior events, not just canceling them.

Fernandes spoke with staff members at several schools.

They told her that the mental health of students is a top priority and they are working to make sure someone is available for students to talk to during this tough time.
