Heavy rains cause dam to fail at College Park lake

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Heavy rains caused a dam to breach and now a lake behind some College Park homes is quickly disappearing.

Channel 2’s Craig Lucie went to the south Fulton County neighborhood where Lake Feldwood is now a huge field of mud.

It’s just minutes away from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport where neighbors have enjoyed the view for decades.

“I looked out at the lake and said oh my goodness,” Sandra Rodgers said.Rodgers view is now a muddy lake bottom.

What water is left is starting to smell from dead fish that birds are starting to feed on.

“When I looked out and saw mud, I felt like crying. I was devastated. It’s such a beautiful lake,” Rodgers said.

We had Newschopper 2 fly over the lake to give you get a better idea of its size.

“The wildlife is suffering. It is suffering so much,” Lora Engle said.

Lucie saw some dead fish in small pools. Larger fish had their backs out of the water since it is so shallow.

Since this dam is on private property, homeowners have to come up with a solution to fix the dam and fill the lake back up.

“We may do a Go Fund Me page. I’m thinking some of the community action groups will get involved and apply for some money to help fix it,” Rodgers said.

Neighbors are planning an emergency meeting Friday evening because they are worried about their property values.

“We will call a couple of engineer companies to come in and give us an estimate and tell us exactly what has to be done to bring it back to its natural state of beauty,” Rodgers said.

They are also calling their county commissioner Emma Darnell to see if the county can help.

We called her office, and we are waiting to hear back.

It’s not the first lake in the area that this happened to recently.
