ATLANTA — Overnight storms caused heavy flooding in southeast Atlanta.
Rain soaked basements, took down power lines, and left a driver stuck on a flooded street.
Power lines on Augusta Avenue, across from Grant Park, fell during the storm that hit late Monday night.
“Our back yard has flooded so frequently, we stopped counting,” Atlanta Avenue homeowner Kevin Lynch said.
Lynch said his basement keeps flooding with sewage during heavy downpours.
“Half an hour after it started raining, the city sewer line by our house overflowed and pumped sewage right into our house,” Lynch said.
Lynch said the water line on his garage door is about 18 inches high. He blames the city sewer system for his troubles.
“Everything on the garage that’s been touched by this contaminated water needs to be removed from the house,” Lynch said.
The rain also flooded Tuskegee Street in the Grant Park area, leaving one driver trapped inside his car while it floated down the street.
“It just looked like there was a little bit of water, then, midway through, my car just stopped and floated right down, and I realized it was up to my car door,” driver Amara Canady said.
Atlanta police came to Canady’s rescue and unclogged a storm drain.
“It was a little scary at first, but thank God for the police,” Canady said.
Georgia Power will return to fix the down power lines when the sun rises, but people in the area still have power.
