Gwinnett County man's personal records sent to wrong house

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett Medical Center sent a patient's personal information to the wrong person, including a copy of his driver's license. Hospital officials are blaming it on a third party vendor that handles their records.

High school graduate Gianni Josephs thought everything was settled after requesting and picking up his medical records from Gwinnett Medical Center.

He got a phone call from a woman saying she got an envelope in the mail with a copy of his driver's license, his birth date, phone number, and a release form he signed.

"I was in disbelief and could not believe with the HIPAA laws they could be so careless and make this kind of mistake," the woman said.

She recently requested her records and picked them up in person, so she wants answers from HealthPort, the company that handles the hospital's medical records.

Likewise, Josephs said, "I would like them to clear it up, and make sure this doesn't happen again to anybody else."

Gwinnett Medical Center released the following statement:

"Based on Gwinnett Medical Center's investigation, we've learned about an input error that led to this situation. That HealthPort employee who made the error is being re-trained and is under quality review."
