Woman carjacked at gunpoint outside senior living facility in Gwinnett, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Some Gwinnett County seniors are shaken up after a resident at a senior living facility was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot on Thursday night.

It happened at the Grayson Ridge Apartments on Grayson Highway outside of Lawrenceville. It was around 9:30 at night when the 61-year-old victim was carjacked by a man who put a gun to her head, according to police.

“Immediately she was screaming,” said Robin Williams, a fellow resident at the complex. “Other people heard it. 911 was called.”

Gwinnett County Police arrested 25-year-old Keyonne Mann by early Friday morning and charged him with armed robbery among other felonies. Jail records show he was on parole at the time of the incident.

Residents like Williams fear the crime could happen again.  They have been waiting since April for several lights in the parking lot to be replaced after they stopped working. Williams put in a repair request herself on April 11.

“Now you have to worry if someone out there and is going to pull a gun on me,” she said.

A spokesperson for the complex says the robbery happened where the lights are functional but there are still plans to fix the broken ones.

In a statement, spokesperson Sandi Scott wrote:

“The well-being of our residents is our top priority. We are working diligently to address the concerns of those living at Grayson Ridge following last night’s incident. We are cooperating with law enforcement and they are providing additional patrols on our property throughout the next 30 days.

We also understand the concerns regarding the non-working lights which are located at the back of the property. The lights do not affect the location where last night’s incident took place, which were fully functional. We have been in contact with both the City of Lawrenceville and Georgia Power to make the necessary repairs, but they have not yet done so. In addition, to speed things up, we have also reached out to two independent electricians to provide quotes to make the necessary repairs. We hope to have them repaired soon.”

However, a spokesperson for the City of Lawrenceville confirmed the property is not within city limits. When reached for comment, a Georgia Power spokesperson said the parking lot lights do not belong to them.

Channel 2 Action News has followed up with the corporate office with Dominium Apartments for clarification.

“We think 30 days is certainly more than enough time for them to get the lights repaired,” said Williams.

Because residents were not immediately notified of the carjacking, Williams says she has been handing out flyers at the property that detail the nature of the carjacking with a warning for residents.

“It’s word of mouth,” she said. “That’s what we’re doing.”
