GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A beloved cafeteria worker at Shiloh Elementary School has passed away at the age of 96.

Martha Strickland, known simply to the kids as “Granny,” worked at the school for 28 years.

“Granny had actually been very healthy and even worked the last day of school, May 26th,” The Gwinnett County School District said in a statement Thursday. “She had a huge heart for the special needs students within our school. She was a remarkable lady who brought a smile to every face within our building.”

Channel 2′s Tony Thomas was there as the school celebrated Granny’s 95th birthday.

It’s became a tradition for Granny to hand out cookies to students on her birthday. She has done it for so long that some of the kids back in the day are now parents themselves.

“I love them and they love me. That means the world. It don’t cost nothing to love somebody,” she said at the time.

The school was Granny’s second career after she worked in data processing in the City of Atlanta for 30 years. She came to Shiloh Elementary in 1991.

“How could you be any happier? And why would you leave a place that you are so loved and taken care of? It’s wonderful,” Strickland said.

The school named a garden after her and they have a plaque with her picture on it at the school entrance.
